The bicentenary

1820-2020

The bicentennial project

The bicentenary of the birth of Henry Vieuxtemps will take place in 2020/2021.

Whether you are a conductor, a chamber musician, a soloist, a composer, a musicologist, a journalist, a columnist, or just a music lover…

Join us and let’s celebrate Vieuxtemps!

The celebrations of the centennial, organised by Eugene Ysaÿe, his faithful disciple, and that of the one hundred-and-fiftieth anniversary under the patronage of her majesty the Queen of Belgium and the French minister of culture, were a huge success.

Today, The Henry Vieuxtemps Association wishes to assemble a community of artists aroud this anniversary so as to:
Play Vieuxtemps’ music by including it in their program
Foster a cultural heritage and spread it worldwide
Talk about, write about , and exchange ideas about his work
Record his compositions
Stimulate further interest in and around this musical heritage
-Ensure the continuation of the ‘Franco-Belge’ school of violin.

This event will be an opportunity to enchant in concert halls, music schools and radio stations, in France and all over the world by playing an excellent repertoire full of virtuosity and musical expression.

Several musicians have already welcomed this project with great enthusiasm:

Nicolas Krause, Lawrence Foster, Alexander Markov,  Philip Bride, Tatsuki Narita, Marc Coppey, Michel Stockhem, Antoine Landowski, Igor and many more.

With this broad support of ambassadors, we want to encourage you to include Vieuxtemps in 2020 and throughout the 2020/2021 season.

The repertoire of Vieuxtemps is diverse: it can be played by different formations ranging from solos, to duets, trios or quartets, and of course symphony orchestras with soloists. The music is primarily for the violon, the cello, the viola but also the piano and vocals.

In his repertoire, 80 pieces of music have been classified. However a further 20 works remain unpublished at the Royal Library of Belgium and with the Vieuxtemps family, including an opera « The Messine fiance ».

Other events can be organised around the bicentenary, such as:
Radio shows
Masterclasses
Musical creations for violin by young artists
Remix in MAO
Round tables on the ‘Franco-Belge’ school of violin or on the influence of Vieuxtemps in Russia and the USA.
Debates about the different interpretations of Vieuxtemps’ works.
Articles, TV shows, lectures on his life, on the child prodigy, the virtuoso, the tireless traveler, the pedagogue, the composer, the artist acclaimed by his peers: Berlioz, Schumann, Wagner, Victor Hugo, Ysaÿe and many others.
We are at your disposal to discuss and think over this project for 2020/2021 as well as subsequently.
Don’t hesitate to contact the association – we have at our disposal a lot of academic material and family documentation. We will create links and can relay your projects.

Agnès Briolle-Vieuxtemps, the President of the Association is a musicologist specialised in Vieuxtemps. Her essay on Vieuxtemps, comprising family letters, has been translated and was published in Japan in 1987, thanks to Marcel Landowski, also a descendant of Henry Vieuxtemps.
